Eighteen-year-old Aizhanat Askerova and 16-year-old Aizhanar Imankozhoeva, who live in the village of Tyup, met as members of the school parliament at V. Kaykin Secondary School. Aizhanar is currently studying in the 10th grade, and her friend, Aizhanat, is a first-year student at the K. Tynystanov Issyk-Kul State University.
According to the girls, they wanted to implement an idea that would allow local residents to learn foreign languages. "In our school, there were the President’s Institute and the Parliament Institute. Aizhanar and I met there, and we became friends. In March 2020, we studied in the city of Karakol. Then the COVID-19 pandemic started, and the learning continued in an online format. Last year, I graduated from school and enrolled in a higher education institution, but we continued communicating. As young activists, we decided to implement our idea," says Aizhanat Askerova.
In the fall of 2020, Aizhanat and Aizhanar participated in short-term business trainings by FSDS and developed a project. The project was approved by the foundation’s commission, and the girls opened a center for learning English. Additionally, the center offers courses for preparing for the national testing.
"To improve our English, Aizhanar and I traveled from Tyup to the regional center, the city of Karakol. We had to travel constantly, and then we realized that we were spending a lot on transportation. Moreover, there was no language center in Tyup. The idea to open such a center came up. In November last year, we participated in a 10-day training, where we learned how to write projects correctly with the help of specialists. At that time, we were the youngest participants. Of course, some didn’t believe in our success and said we would just waste time. In February 2021, we were told that the project was approved. We started accepting students in April. A teacher from one of the schools conducts the lessons. Aizhanar and I, to gain experience, conduct an interactive session for the center's students once a week. To date, 70 local residents study English for one hour every day," says Aizhanar Imankozhoeva.
Aizhanar is the eldest child in her family, with two younger sisters and a younger brother. After graduating from school, she plans to apply to educational institutions in the USA or Germany. Aizhanat plans to return to her native village after graduating from Issyk-Kul State University and expand the opportunities of the learning center. She has four children in her family.
