Sustaining local food system for a healthy diet

Since November 2017, FSDS together with three local partners has been implementing the food/nutrition security project to contribute to overall food/nutrition improvement in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.


Titled as “Sustaining local food system for a healthy diet” the project aims to support

  • vulnerable households to improve their nutrition status through advanced and diversified food production/processing
  • district (rayon) authorities to advance food/nutrition related infrastructure such as potable water systems, processing facilities
  • national stakeholders (ministries, platforms) to further improve food/nutrition policies and legislation.


To achieve these aims, the following specific objectives are to be attained in three oblast of Kyrgyzstan (Issyk-Kul, Naryn, and Jalalabad) and one oblast of Tajikistan (Sughd):

  • Family food production chain is diversified and improved for 250 women groups and 1000 smallholder families
  • The nutrition status of the children at the undernourishment risk is improved in the 300 families
  • Public awareness campaign on the healthy and balanced cooking and eating is conducted in both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan
  • Food and nutrition security strategy is developed in three rayons and related stakeholders’ capacity on food/nutrition enhanced
  • One national analysis on roles and responsibilities in the food and nutrition security is carried out and at least three main outcomes of the analysis are lobbied at the policy level in Kyrgyzstan
  • Two farmer groups are supported to become a model for production improvement and/or processing
  • Water-stressed 30 communities are supported to rehabilitate/improve their potable water supply


The project is to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goal 2 “Achieve food security and improved nutrition for all” as well as National Programmes that address issues of food security, nutrition and potable water.
